Nakama means Friend. If you watch the Arlong Arc they have a whole thing about the translation of the word and how it has multiple meanings but generally means the same thing.

I been wondering what nakama and yosh mean in this anime?
Nakama means a lot of things to do with friends or comrades...and yosh really just means 'Yes!' or 'Okay!' or 'Let's go!'

It means Friend in lamens terms.
Nakama means friend/family/companion. It loses a lot in translation, which is why they decided not to.
